Oslo is the biggest city in Norway, and has been the country’s capital since 1814. The Goverment and Parliament are located here, and at the end of Oslo’s main street, Karl Johans gate, you find the Royal Palace. Oslo has a great location at the head of the Oslo Fjord, surrounded by forested hills. The city is a great destination for those who enjoy outdoor activities.

Even in the city centre, the nearest park is never more than a few blocks away. A ten-minute boat ride from the centre takes you to lovely beaches on the Oslo Fjord islands. In the winter Oslo has hundreds of kilometers of cross-country trails within the city boundries, in addition to eight ski centres.

In 2007 Reader’s Digest ranked Oslo as number two on a list of the world’s greenest, most liveable cities!
At the same time Oslo has everything you would expect from a capital.

The city offers an abundance of attractions, shopping possibilities and a flourishing cultural life, and a choice of restaurants which is almost unparalleled in Scandinavia.

The possibilities are always many – whether you want to enjoy a sumptuous meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant or you prefer a brisk, refreshing dogsleigh ride in the snow-draped winter forest.

The 55th running of the Eurovision Song Contest will take place in the Oslo area, Host Broadcaster NRK and the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) jointly announced today. The two Semi-Finals of the contest are now confirmed to take place on Tuesday 25 May and Thursday 27 May, the Grand Final on Saturday 29 May, 2010. A venue to host the competition is still to be chosen.

Traditionally, the winning country hosts the next edition of the contest. Preparations for the 2010 running of the contest took off as soon as Norway was declared winner of the competition. “It is a great honour for NRK to host the Eurovision Song Contest once again. Together with our colleagues of the EBU we are determined to organise this event in line with the highest standards,” said Hans-Tore Bjerkaas, Chief Executive of NRK. The Norwegian broadcaster hosted the Eurovision Song Contest before in 1986 and 1996, and hosted the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2004.

“Enormous production”

“We are looking forward to work with NRK on this enormous production. One year from now, they will have the opportunity to show Europe and the world what they are capable of,” said Svante Stockselius, Executive Supervisor of the contest on behalf of the EBU.

Norway’s Fairytale

Norway’s Alexander Rybak won the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest with unprecedented support from across Europe, which resulted in a 169-point lead over runners-up Iceland. Rybak’s self-penned song Fairytale is well underway to become a pan-European hit. The 23-year old winner is currently travelling across the continent to promote his winning song and his forthcoming album Fairytales.

About NRK

Founded in 1933, the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation, better known as NRK, is Norway’s largest media house. Every day 86 percent of all Norwegians use NRK’s programme offering, whether on TV, the radio, the Internet or mobile phones. Some 3,400 people work at NRK, which is one of the founding members of the EBU.
