Arsène Wenger is well aware that the critics are questioning his team’s top-four credentials. But the Arsenal boss is backing his team to silence their doubters in what could be the most open title race for years.

Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool have occupied the Premier League’s top four positions for five of the last six seasons. Everton gate-crashed their party in 2005 but, although Tottenham went close a year later, the status quo has prevailed ever since.

Things could be different this season. Aston Villa and Everton built up a head of steam last term without staying the course, Tottenham have enjoyed a resurgence under Harry Redknapp and – lest we forget – Manchester City have been throwing cash around like confetti.

Arsenal’s relatively meagre transfer activity makes them easy targets for those predicting an upheaval among the elite but, in truth, the entire Big Four will be looking over their shoulders at the chasing pack.

Wenger is expecting a battle royal for the title – and a frantic race for the Champions League places.

“What is the ‘Big Four’ now? We’ll get the answer soon what it will be,” he said ahead of this weekend’s big kick-off.

“You can never say that Man City will not be there in the fight, you cannot say that Aston Villa will not be there, maybe Tottenham can have a good season, Everton always, and there is always a surprise. So we have a top eight or nine.

“I don’t know what people are thinking [about us dropping out of the top four], I live with my own thoughts. What people in England think depends where they come from, who they support. Maybe some of the fans on our side have the fear we will drop out of the top four. But that’s guided by fear, not objective assessment of our performances.

“It is certainly the most competitive race for the top four since I’ve been here. But at the start we race for the top spot. After the minimal target is the top four but you don’t start the season thinking like that.

“There is no rule that forbids a team from outside the ‘Big Four’ winning the League. Why not? Man City, Aston Villa… Villa at some stage last year were close before they collapsed in the final third of the season.”

Arsène Wenger is setting his sights as high as ever this season.

The departures of Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Adebayor to Manchester City have prompted some to suggest that Arsenal have a job on their hands to keep their top-four place intact.

But while many observers project doom and gloom, Wenger’s outlook is optimistic. He admits that securing a Champions League place is the first target but he will not settle for that this season.

“The ambition is to finish as high as possible,” said the manager at his pre-match press conference.

“What is as high as possible is to finish first, it is as simple as that. The competition is of a high level and many aspire to that so let’s continue to play the game the way we want to play it and I believe we can show that we have made big steps forward.

“The ambition is to win the title but there is a maximum aspiration and a minimum aspiration. Of course you want minimum to be in the top four and maximum to win the title.

“It is exactly the same [in Europe] but first of all we want to qualify for the Champions League and we have a tricky opponent. But let’s first start well in the Premier League.”

At first glance the loss of Toure and Adebayor appears to have weakened Arsenal’s squad. But the issue is not so cut-and-dried for Wenger. The Frenchman has added to his defensive options this summer and expects a significant improvement from the youngsters who spent last season under the microscope.

“We have developed, and are young. Why should we not be better in August than we were in March?” asked Wenger.

“We have a very young squad and we lost two great players. However, we have bought [Thomas] Vermaelen to replace Kolo and we have Eduardo back, who for me is a great player.

“We have players who develop very well and are young, like Vela, Bendtner, Walcott, who are all strikers, so I do not feel we are short in these positions.”

Also-rans? Arsenal might be rather more than that on the strength of this performance.

They were written off in most quarters before a ball was kicked this season but Arsène Wenger’s players showed they mean business with an emphatic win on Merseyside.

Denilson curled in a sumptuous 25-yarder to get the ball rolling and Thomas Vermaelen marked a hugely impressive debut with a thumping header from Robin van Persie’s free-kick. William Gallas nodded in a third from close range as Arsenal took a stranglehold on the game before half-time.

Cesc Fabregas rounded off a classic counter-attack two minutes into the second half and added a fifth from long range before Eduardo tapped in late on to compound Everton woes.

Louis Saha scored a stoppage-time consolation for Everton but that did not stop the travelling fans roaring a heart-warming refrain as they left Goodison Park: “We are top of the League!”

There’s an awfully long way to go, of course, but Arsenal have laid down a marker. The early signs are promising to say the least and they won’t face many tougher away trips than this before May.

The most notable name on Wenger’s first team-sheet of the season was Vermaelen’s. The summer signing from Ajax had a taste of the ‘up and at ‘em’ nature of English football at Barnet last month but Everton, among the top flight’s finest set-piece exponents, would test Vermaelen to the limit.

He passed his examination with flying colours.

After kicking off four consecutive seasons on home soil, Arsenal were probably due an opening-day away trip. And they don’t come much harder than Everton. Mind you, as Manuel Almunia pointed out last week, he’d sooner be here in the August sunshine than the January frost. The Goodison Park surface is rather more pristine at this time of year and you sensed that might suit Arsenal’s neat, passing game.

So it proved.

With Alex Song providing a solid base in midfield, Fabregas and Denilson broke quickly to support the front three of Nicklas Bendtner, Andrey Arshavin and Van Persie. And after an even opening, the pendulum swung Arsenal’s way.

Bendtner and Van Persie had already fired early shots across Everton’s bows when the Dutchman made a break down the right in the 25th minute. He clipped the ball inside to Fabregas and the captain slid it into Denilson’s path, 25 yards from goal.

The Brazilian met it perfectly, curling the ball beyond Tim Howard’s despairing dive and into the top corner. No one touched the ball more than Denilson in the Premier League last season; none of those touches were as impressive as this one.

Everton looked for an immediate response but found Vermaelen in their path. The centre back stood up well to twice deny Leon Osman as the midfielder looked to break into the box.

Then Denilson, just seven minutes after opening the scoring, kicked Maroune Fellaini’s header off the line to deny the hosts an equaliser.

A goal then would have changed the context of the game. Instead, Arsenal tightened their grip nine minutes before the break.

Van Persie, having over-hit a couple of free-kicks from a similar position, floated a perfect delivery towards the far post from 40 yards out. Vermaelen had peeled off cleverly and powered a header past Howard.

If it was a pleasant surprise to see Arsenal score from one set-piece, to see them score from two was pure delight.

This time Fabregas provided the ammunition, curling a free-kick in from the left, and Gallas glanced the ball into the bottom corner. That was pretty much game, set and match.

Denilson almost added a fourth before the break but Howard got down well to deny the Brazilian. The Everton keeper did not have to wait long for another test of his credentials.

Only two minutes of the second half had elapsed when Arsenal cleared a corner and then raced the length of the pitch to score a beautifully-crafted fourth. Denilson found Van Persie on the left and Fabregas made a gut-busting charge through the centre to collect the Dutchman’s pass and beat Howard.

Jack Rodwell, one third of a triple Everton substitution, fired over the bar as the home side searched in vain for scraps. But David Moyes’ side were a shadow of the team that troubled Arsenal so much here in January.

Fabregas soon underlined the visitors’ superiority, storming through the middle before arrowing a low shot into the bottom corner. Then Eduardo got in on the act with two minutes left, tapping in after Arshavin’s effort had bounced off the post.

Saha snatched a late consolation to leave a minor stain on Arsenal’s clean sheet but it did nothing to dampen spirits in the away end. “Boring, boring Arsenal!” mocked the visiting fans.

Before this game Wenger suggested that his team would need 82 points for a serious stab at the title.

Three down, 79 to go. The ‘also-rans’ are up and running in the grandest manner.

http://www.arsenal.com/match/report/0809/post/first-team/premier-league-everton-v-arsenal-report?tab=report

Creating headlines is easy these days and, frankly, Arsène Wenger sometimes gets tired of responding to spurious stories.

Take this week’s reports about Barcelona’s interest in Cesc Fabregas. At his usual Friday press conference, the manager rubbished the very notion that he would sell his skipper and joked that he could make a counter inquiry for Lionel Messi. It would be news of course but if he received a valuation of £125 million the deal is never going to actually happen!

“Cesc is committed to the Club,” said the manager. “He has told me that and told that to the press. We cannot master the noises coming out of Spain.

“They have the same problems in the newspapers looking for headlines. When they have no ideas anymore, they come out with a Fabregas story.

“He has corrected those stories. It is not him who encourages the idea. It is the press who encourages the idea. Where does that story come from? Does that come from Fabregas two days ago? It comes from Spain.

“[For example] I have made a bid for Messi and nobody speaks about it,” he joked. Then, with a big smile on his face, the manager said he was quoted £125 million.

“How can people think we will sell Fabregas one day before the start of the Premier League?,” he went on.

“We are not in a weak financial position, we don’t need to sell anybody. Cesc has always been very committed, this is his sixth year, what he wants is to win trophies for the Club.”

http://www.arsenal.com/news/news-archive/wenger-blame-the-press-not-cesc-fabregas

on being applauded by the Everton fans…
“Well it was a good team performance. I feel overall there is still room for improvement, not on the scoreline but in what we did today. But overall I am very happy with the team attitude basically, and we look like we have matured. And it’s a good basis to continue to improve and to work on what we want to do.”

on responding to the doubters…
“We have gone from being ruled out by everybody, to now becoming a super favourite, I think these two extremes are good. It was an interesting first game and we want to show that we have the squad. If you see that Nasri, Rosicky, Diaby, Walcott today… and Senderos, for example, stayed at home. You see that, and considering who was on the bench, we do have quite a big squad.”

on the lack of threat from Everton…
“I felt that we took every chance we created in the first half and Everton were maybe a bit disturbed by the international week – you will be flat physically. Usually the energy level here is very, very high. Did that not happen because we had domination in the game or because they were flat physically? That is difficult for me to answer.“

on Thomas Vermaelen’s debut…
“I am pleased with his contribution because he has shown that in the air and on the ground he has all you need to play in the Premiership.”

on Cesc Fabregas‘ contribution to…
“You cannot single one player out today for an average performance. What is very interesting for me is that the cohesion of the team, the fact that we played for each other, and if we can keep that in the team we have a chance.”

on getting a good result ahead of the Celtic tie…
“It is important. It lifted our confidence and that is good. But we are on alert as well. We know that every game is different. That is the way we can show we have matured. People are surprised, but you know that we were last year the team that scored more goals than anyone away from home. And we had a long unbeaten run in the Premiership away from home. Of course it is a surprise to win with such a score. But we know we can do it away from home.”

Arsène Wenger has opened the door for Philippe Senderos to leave Arsenal and the manager may go into the transfer market to sign a replacement.

The Swiss centre half is back at Emirates Stadium at the moment after a season-long loan with Milan but he will be allowed to move to Goodison Park if the Merseyside club make their interest concrete.

Speaking at the launch of Arsenal’s new Charity of the Season, Wenger said he had adequate resources to cover the departure but was open to a new signing and did not rule out a swoop for Fulham defender Brede Hangeland.

“At the moment there’s an interest from Everton [in Senderos] but he is still our player,” said the Frenchman at Great Ormond Street Hospital.

“He has an opportunity to go because he has one year to go on his contract. We will see what happens in the next week.

“If he goes, and if there is an opportunity, then we will look. But we still have Silvestre, Gallas, Djourou, Vermaelen and Song. That’s five centre backs.”

Regarding Hangeland, Wenger said: “We’ve had a look at him. We have not contacted Fulham or contacted Hangeland. We have not made our choice so it is difficult to talk about names right now.”

Teenage sensation Jack Wilshere reminds Arsène Wenger of a young Wayne Rooney.

At 17 years old, the Hitchin-born midfielder is already Arsenal’s youngest Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League player. And, after appearing fleetingly for Wenger’s side last season, he looks set for further involvement this term.

The manager sees parallels between Wilshere’s rise and that of Wayne Rooney, who hit the headlines as a 16-year-old at Everton, before a big-money switch to Manchester United in 2004.

“Jack reminds me a bit of Rooney when he started,” Wenger said in his press conference at Great Ormond Street Hosptial. “In his belief and his positive attitude to go forwards.

“For the rest, he has still a lot to learn, relations with other players team-wise, but there are some great basics there.

“But as a manager you do not want a guy to be a star before he has delivered, and maybe here that is more difficult than anywhere else.”

Fabio Capello was present at the Emirates Cup which Wilshere illuminated with two goals and two Man of the Match performances.

However, when asked whether he thought Wilshere will be called up for England’s seniors, Wenger said: “You should ask that question to Capello.

“But I believe they will leave him out of the national team at the moment.”
